April-18

A Birthday
Christina Georgina Rossetti (5 December 1830 – 29 December 1894)

My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a watered shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves, and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves, and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.

The Charge of the Light Brigade
Alfred, Lord Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892)

1.
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
“Charge for the guns!” he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
2.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismay’d?
Not tho’ the soldier knew
Some one had blunder’d:
Their’s not to make reply,
Their’s not to reason why,
Their’s but to do and die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
3.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
4.
Flash’d all their sabres bare,
Flash’d as they turn’d in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder’d:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro’ the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel’d from the sabre-stroke
Shatter’d and sunder’d.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
5.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro’ the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
6.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder’d.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

  1. My Nest of Silk and Purple Dyes

    In the sea of a hundred eyes,
    my heart, my heart, my heart—
    a nest of silk and purple dyes.

    Thro’ smoke, and death, and hell,
    from six hundred pomegranates shot,
    the brigade of silver jaws fought and fell.

    Flash’d from cannons—peacocks and doves,
    gladder than silver, gladder than gold,
    boldly singing of love.

  2. BARE SHATTER’D HEART

    Sabres come of the eyes well
    that Tennyson bird
    dismay’d, my mouth is gladder of my charge
    right work, these thunder’d gold loves
    like a gold cannon heart
    behind them, and the reason?
    A light heart and a pomegranate
    in its mouth, and
    an apple tree, singing;
    life rode onward, like fruit–
    and me
    blunder’d into death.

  3. Love Content Went for a Walk in the Merry, Merry Month of May; or, Cupid’s Folly

    Half a league, half a league,
    Half a league onward,
    Onward all in the valley of the halcyon Sea;

    Half a league, half a league, half a league,
    Half a league onward and onward and onward and onward and onward;

    Onward and onward and onward and onward and onward and onward
    and onward and onward and onward and onward and onward and onward,
    Onward and onward and onward and onward and onward
    and onward and onward and onward;

    Battery gunners with a hundred eyes volley’d
    with heart and shell
    Cannon shot plunged dismay’d
    and singing fell:

    Shatter’d and sunder’d;

    Half a league, half a league,

  4. Hero of love

    My heart broke like the Valley of Death,
    the mouth of Hell singing of pomegranates and grape leaves
    My heart blunder’d onward–
    my heart of peacocks and gold apples
    my glad heart of doves
    boldly into life
    back into the world

  5. no reason

    carve it into my eyes
    not behind not to fade
    but there in front of my eyes

    when he left he said someone was singing of hero-death noble-death
    and the man on the dias said come with me into the glory . shoot

    when he left he said someone was singing the wonder the valley of death
    and the man in charge said there is reason golden reason to die . shoot

    love there is no reason and it is all shot to hell
    there is no hero no wonder no singing

    there is smoke and thunder and death
    come to shatter my left-behind heart

    carve that on to my bare eyes
    come with a sabre and work on it
    in the half-light of the fought world

    there is a charge for love
    and it is a wild wild charge

    but there is no charge for guns

  6. Honour Me

    Reel in my charging heart.
    Hang it from the tree
    whose leaves of gold
    nest in silver smoke from
    the valley of death — and carve
    my love in these down-bent boughs,
    thickset with six hundred
    pomegranate’s eyes — then raise
    me to the purple dais
    at the mouth of hell
    and honour me.

    I thought, while I had the time, I’d do another one — if that’s OK?

  7. Reason Not

    Work it in gold, the glory and honour
    Hang Death in purple and silver
    Honour Hell with a hundred eyes
    Carve a man with plunged heart, shatter’d jaws
    Make Death with a rainbow of sabre-stroke
    And raise not light but a hundred sunder’d
